The OnePlus One is manufactured by a Chinese startup company OnePlus. The device sports a 5.5-inch LTPS LCD Capacitive touch screen with 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. It comes out of box with Android Kitkat v4.4.2 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset. Internally the device features 16/64 GB memory and 3 GB RAM. If you’ve already brought Oneplus One and wish to be a super user, this article is for you. Below are the simple steps to root OnePlus One. The process of rooting OnePlus One require three consecutive steps:

1. Unlocking Bootloader

2. Installing Custom Recovery 

3. Root OnePlus One

Any of the above steps may erase entire data on device. So, please follow the prerequisites mentioned below to safeguard your personal data.

Prerequisites

Check Device Model Number

It is vital to check device model number before getting into rooting/flashing process. The device model number should be OnePlus One. If the device model number doesn’t match with mentioned one, do not attempt the tutorial.(This guide will not work on Oneplus One with CM12S OS).

Steps To Be Considered

  • Connect the device to PC using USB cable. If it displays any error message, your PC doesn’t have OnePlus drivers. So, continue to process after installing OnePlus USB drivers.
  • Enable USB debugging on the OnePlus One which lets the device establish a stable connection with computer via USB. You can do it by following the below mentioned path. In latest versions of Android, the Enable Debugging option will be hidden in depth of settings category. You can follow our guide to enable USB debugging.
  • Rooting the device erase entire data on the device including internal SD card. So, make sure you create a backup of entire important data. If you are not familiar with Android backup process, you can refer our guide to Backup Android phone data.
  • Make sure the phone’s battery is at least 60% charged at the start up of tutorial. If battery runs off during unlocking process, it may turn your phone into brick. So, charge the device before tutorial.

Step-By-Step Tutorial

1. Unlocking BootLoader

Step 1: Download the ADB and fastboot installation files and extract the zip to Desktop.

Step 2: Once you extract the files, turn off the device and boot it into fastboot mode by holding Power + Volume Up buttons. The device displays a “fastboot” message indicating the device is on fastboot mode.

Step 3: In fastboot mode connect the phone to PC using USB cable.

Step 4: Now launch a command prompt window[Shift+Right Click>>Choose Open command window here] in ADB Drivers_updated folder of previously extracted zip folder.

Step 5: Now type fastboot devices in the command prompt window. Once the command processes, it fetches the information of all the connected devices. If your OnePlus one’s serial code is shown there, the device is successfully connected else, you need to fix the driver issues.

Step 6: If the device is recognized, you can get started with the unlocking process. You should note that performing any step from here may erase entire data on device. So, make sure you’ve done a backup of important data.

If you are ready, type the following text in command prompt window

fastboot oem unlock

Step 7: Once the above command is processed, type the following command to complete unlocking process

fastboot reboot

The OnePlus one will reboot now. Wait until it starts manually and adjust following settings for further tutorial.

  • Enable USB debugging by following the guide in prerequisites.
  • Disable CM Recovery Protection by following below path

Settings>>Developer Options>>Disable Update recovery with system updates

Now close the command window and continue to installation of custom recovery on OnePlus One.

2. Installing Custom Recovery

Step 1: Firstly, Download the TWRP Custom recovery file to your PC.

Step 2: Once the download completes, rename the file to recovery.img and make sure it should not become recovery.img.img.

Step 3: Place the recovery.img file in ADB Drivers_updated folder of previously extracted zip file. Now turn off the device and boot it into fastboot mode by holding Power up + Volume buttons. The device displays a “fastboot” message indicating the device is on fastboot mode.

Step 4: Now launch a command prompt window[Shift+Right Click>>Choose Open command window here] in the same window.

Step 5: Now enter the following code in command prompt window:

fastboot flash recovery recovery.img

Step 6:  Now the recovery image file will be flashed on to OnePlus one. Wait until it completes and manually turn off the device and turn it on while holding Volume down+Power buttons. If the device enters custom recovery mode, the installation is successful.

You’ve successfully installed custom TWRP recovery on OnePlus One. So, you can now root OnePlus One in just a few steps. Get started with the steps below:

3. Rooting OnePlus One

Step 1: Download SuperSu rooting package and copy it to your phone’s root folder.

Step 2: Turn off the device and boot into custom recovery mode by holding Power+Volume up buttons together.

Step 3: In the recovery menu choose Install zip from SD card>>Choose zip from SD card>>browse and choose the previously copied SuperSu zip file. Conform the installation and reboot the device.

That’s all! You’ve successfully rooted OnePlus One.
